Temporary average speed cameras have now been removed from the A82 at Glencoe.

Temporary average speed cameras have recently been removed from the A82 at Glencoe after enforcing for five weeks.

The temporary cameras were positioned to support safer driving behaviour and to help reduce the risk of collisions in an area that experiences a mix of local traffic and visitors, over the busier end of season period.

The expectation is that these cameras will return next Spring when vehicle numbers, and subsequently the risk of collisions, increase.

During the five-week period, 71 vehicles were detected exceeding the speed limit, with 84% of all offences involving vans.

Eric Dunion, Police Scotland Safety Camera Unit Manager says: “Due to the anticipated increase in traffic during the holiday season along the A82 and A85 enforcement was put in place using the temporary average speed camera systems. Technology continues to develop and these cameras are powered using a mini generator which makes them suitable for placement in more rural areas.

With only 71 offences detected it is really encouraging that the majority of those travelling have adhered to the speed limits in place and we would like to thank motorists for their compliance. However, it is disappointing to see that so many offences have involved light goods vehicles who have restricted speed limits of 50mph (unless towing) on this section of road 10mph less than a car.  All motorists should be aware of the speed limit for the vehicles that they are driving.”
