Temporary average speed cameras to enforce along A82 and A85

Temporary average speed cameras have begun enforcing the speed limits on the A82 at Glencoe and the A85 between Tyndrum and Dalmally as part on ongoing efforts to improve road safety around Scotland.

The temporary cameras have been positioned to support safer driving behaviour and to help reduce the risk of collisions in an area that experiences a mix of local traffic and visitors, particularly during this time of year.

These temporary average speed cameras operate by making use of solar energy which enables the technology to be deployed at locations which had been previously isolated for fixed infrastructure. The cameras calculate a vehicles average speed over a measured distance, rather than at a single point, encouraging consistent compliance with the posted speed limit.

Police Scotland Safety Cameras currently have a number of locations along the A82, where they regularly enforce using mobile technology. By identifying sections of this road which would benefit from the introduction of the temporary average speed cameras it allows mobile resources to be allocated elsewhere across the area.

By deploying temporary average speed cameras on the A82 and A85 we aim to remind all drivers and riders of the importance of complying with the speed limits.

Even a small reduction in excessive traffic speeds can deliver improvements to road safety and these average speed cameras will assist in delivering a safer environment for all road users”.
